Business Adventure For Business Link Devon & Cornwall

The programme was initially inspired by the hit BBC TV show Dragons’ Den, where entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas to a panel of experienced business judges.

The Brief

Business Link Devon and Cornwall wanted to develop an educational programme to ten schools in the region to promote and develop Entrepreneurial skills in year ten and eleven students.

They turned to CragRats to deliver their Enterprise programme throughout ten schools in the region.

The Programme

Our response to the brief was to design a creative and engaging, interactive, and ongoing scheme of work that inspired both students and teachers to take up the Enterprise challenge.

A live theatre presentation enabled students to see and experience aspirational characters in an Entrepreneurial context. The performance highlighted the essential skills and qualities required to be a successful entrepreneur.

Interactive workshops were designed to enable students to take personal responsibility for the learning, identifying their own skills and qualities and developing their very own business ideas. The workshop day was delivered by a specialist team of CragRats facilitators, and an advisor from Business Link.

The event climaxed as business teams presented their very own business idea to a special panel of business judges. The winning team was chosen to progress with their business idea and awarded £250 start up capital to further develop their deal over the coming months.

Development Phase

Resources were designed to help each school’s team during the business development stage. The resources include:

• On-line website with various downloads such as business plans for the students use.

• On-line web forum, to enable student to ask questions of real business leaders.

• A Business Adviser from Business link working with each school team.• £250 start-up funding for each team.

• Comprehensive teachers’ resources for mentoring teams and teaching enterprise.

The Finale

The students reconvened at the Eden project in Devon and got the chance to present their business plan in a professional format to the panel of Judges. The winning team received a fantastic prize provided by a local sponsor.

The Benefits

The programme has proved instrumental in raising awareness of Enterprise in schools and also enabling the creation of real enterprises run by young people.
