Guide to Transformational Leadership
Here at CragRats we have noticed an increase in demand for Transformational Leadership programmes. A difficult climate and increasingly competitive landscape means that additional demands are being made of our managers. More than ever managers need to motivate and inspire their teams. For those of you that are new to the ideas of Transformational Leadership, we have put together a ‘Guide to Transformational Leadership’: The Basics Transformational Leadership is all about inspiring people. It refers to the engagement of those around you that results in an increase in their motivation – simple really(!) A transformational leader focuses on people’s emotions and values whilst considering their long term goals and personal motivations in order to help them achieve their maximum potential. There are those individuals that naturally posses these skills that just need honing, and others whereby it conflicts with their ideas of being a good leader that require more attention. Recognising a transformational leader: Developing passion - Have you ever watched an episode of Grand Designs where Kevin is totally immersed in an idea, not because it’s beautiful build, but because the person building it is so passionate about what they are trying to achieve? That’s transformational leadership -being a strong role model so that those around you can identify with your passion, want to be involved and want to be part of achieving the vision. Lead by example – “The best behaviour that you can expect from your team is the worst behaviour that you display.” Leaders communicate their high expectations of others through their own behaviour. It is this behaviour that inspires others to be share the characteristics of the leader and emulate them. Encouragement – a leader is not threatened by people coming up with new ideas and the desire to succeed. They encourage those around them to be creative and innovate, even challenging them on their own beliefs and values. Belief in development – by taking the role of coach and adviser a leader will help develop an individual and assist in them achieving their goals. Transformational leadership can help to change and transform organisations in the face of ongoing change and adversity.
