SSE is an organisation with a core set of values which guide employee behaviour in the workplace with a particularly strong focus on Health and Safety, encouraging employees to maintain an attitude of ‘we do everything safely or not at all.’ One area where this is particularly challenging however is in influencing people’s driving habits, an activity which many believe to be out of the jurisdiction of H&S issues and one in which most believe they are highly skilled. SSE commissioned CragRats to produce an innovative learning mechanism that would be memorable and fresh and reinforce the belief that safe operation of company vehicles is not optional.
The solution was to create an interactive DVD which, combined with workshop activities and discussions to be delivered in a ‘tool-box talk’ style by line managers would encourage participants to consider their own driving standards and how these could be improved.
Ed Shears: In order to grab the audience’s attention and to enable greater creativity the design process, it was decided that the use of a contemporary animation style would be most effective. The character of Ed Shears, an aggressive driver with a low perception of risk, was developed in order to illustrate the dangers of not treating driving as a task in its own right and results of believing you are a better driver than you are.
