Calderdale Local Education Authority

Calderdale Local Education Authority

School and Children’s Services directorate at Calderdale Local Education Authority

“Good interaction between actors and students. Students eager to participate; answering questions, joining in activities. The information you presented was relevant to real life situations.”

Teacher, Ravenscliffe High School

/challenge

A recent rise in rape statistics and proven links between alcohol misuse and sexual violence in Calderdale prompted the Local Education Authority to commission an education programme for schools, pupil referral units and youth clubs in the Halifax area. The tour formed part of a wider Community Safety campaign designed to tackle the growing concern regarding young people involved in instances of sexual violence related to excessive alcohol consumption.

Calderdale LEA wanted to create awareness amongst young people of the causes and effects of alcohol misuse, with emphasis on the potential link between alcohol and sexual violence. The campaign was targeted at young people aged between 13 and 16.

/approach

CragRats delivered an education programme that combined hard-hitting drama with forum theatre, interactive workshops and open debate. The presentation illustrated the impact that alcohol can have on confidence and decision-making skills. Small groups of young people then went on to explore issues such as risk-taking, personal responsibility and the local availability of sexual health services.

/results

  • Helped young people identify the risks associated with living in a culture dominated by excessive alcohol consumption
  • The event addressed complex issues such as personal responsibility, safe sex, relationships, and peer pressure, role models, young people’s rights and the role of the law
  • Specific sexual health information services were clearly signposted to the young people
  • 79% of students evaluated said that the performance clearly showed the potential consequences of excessive drinking
  • 38% were sure that they would alter their behaviours when they went out with their friends

Student comments

  • “The performance has encouraged me to consider and be more aware of my surroundings when I’m out clubbing.” Halifax High
  • “I think it was very good, it was funny but you could see the serious message. It was good that we got involved.” Crossley Heath School
