Sexual Health
Sexual Health Years 10 and 11 Bradford South and West Primary Care Trust in partnership with Bradford Health Development Service /challenge CragRats was commissioned to deliver a sexual health education programme for Year 10 and 11 pupils in Bradford schools. The programme was to be delivered to a wide cultural mix of young people to give key information on health and relationships whilst signposting local support and advice services. /approach CragRats worked in consultation with Bradford PCT to develop and deliver a sexual health programme designed specifically for young people in Bradford. The main objectives were to raise the self esteem of teenagers, explode some of the myths surrounding sexual relationships and empower them to take personal responsibility for their own behaviour. The opening performance set the agenda and raised key issues for discussion. This was followed by workshops delivered together with the PCT. The workshops were run by CragRats’ facilitators and featured a question and answer forum session, hosted by professional representatives from Bradford PCT. /results - The project ensured an increased awareness of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV / AIDS information and the accessibility of sexual health services
- Through both the drama and the activities that followed, issues surrounding teenage pregnancy, sexual health knowledge and the importance of contraception were highlighted
- The use of humour, relevant and accessible language encouraged development of a more open, honest and mature attitude towards sex and sexual health
- With CragRats facilitators taking the lead on sex education and providing a safe and confidential environment, young people felt less embarrassed to talk about the issues
- A professional nurse was available during the workshops, for accurate information access
