Cumbria and Lancashire Strategic Health Authority

“Everyone involved in the making of the video thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The CragRats team were really good at making those involved feel at ease and this comes through in the resource.  Lots of people have asked if we used actors and are very surprised to find that everyone featured in the DVD are local people that support others to live independent lives.”
Ann Love, Business Development Manager Learning Disabilities and Mental Health, Workforce Directorate

/the project

Cumbria and Lancashire wished to raise awareness of working with the learning disability services using a DVD and resource pack.  The super objective of the project was to help recruit support workers for people with learning difficulties.

/pre-production

During the consultation period with the client, it became apparent that it would be beneficial to speak to people with learning disabilities.  This enabled us to understand what was important to include in the DVD and what the specific needs that should to be addressed were. It was also decided that it would be good idea to let the people with learning difficulties be part of the production.

We decide to film both those with learning difficulties and those who support them to create a warm-hearted resource that really captures how rewarding the vocation can be.

/post-production

The eleven minute DVD allows a fascinating insight into the role of a support worker.  It is pitched at a wide audience and therefore can be used in schools to encourage young people to consider support work, through to recruitment fairs and training.

Cumbria & Lancashire Strategic Health Authority in Partnership with East Lancashire Pathways to Work

“Working with CragRats has helped the NHS to actualise real patient stories in video format, creating a learning and development tool which is invaluable in raising the awareness of health professional of the kind of barriers vulnerable patients commonly face in accessing health care.”
Dr Fiona Ford
Senior Lecturer in General Practice/Medical Advisor East Lancashire Pathways to Work
University of Central Lancashire/Teaching PCT for East Lancashire

CragRats were tasked with the creation of a DVD resource that would work with supporting teaching materials.  The DVD was to be used by health professionals to promote awareness of vulnerable patients and the well-being of all patients; particularly ethnic minorities and people with disabilities.

/pre-production

As with every project that CragRats creates, there is an initial period of consultation with the client to devise objectives and plans that meet expectations.  With this particular project the consultation period also involved patients who had shared their experiences of the treatment they had received from the health service.

From this, two emotive scenarios were scripted and filmed on location.  These two scenarios explored the barriers that patients may face when needing treatment within the NHS.

/post-production

The DVD is now an intricately designed training aid that is used, together with a set of teaching materials, to tackle a specific training need within the Cumbria and Lancashire Strategic Health Authority.  The DVD acts as an effective spring board to discussions, creating effective learning.
