ROK
Health and Safety at ROK “We are delighted to have won such a prestigious award for our work with CragRats. The events have become synonymous with the best form of training ever undertaken in this business and are constantly talked about as a great and different learning experience as well as a fantastic team building event.” Rob Bath, Rok plc North West Regional Leader /challenge Rok aims to become the Nation's Local Builder™ by operating from a network of offices in major towns across the UK, using dedicated teams who live and work in their communities. Rok employs 4000 staff and is a FTSE company. Rok Plc (North West division) approached CragRats looking for a new way of tackling health and safety training. Rok saw a need for each individual to be aware of the human impact of accidents and to take personal responsibility for their own safety as well as that of others. The aim was to reduce the cost of accidents, both human and financial, ensuring staff and community safety. CragRats needed to create a culture change at Rok – replacing a blame culture with a praise culture; ensuring that employees felt they could be open and honest when reporting hazards or accidents, without fear of reprisal. /approach We created a series of scripted scenarios backed up by facilitated workshops, coaching and discussion. The scenarios were written in consultation with Rok, in order to reflect reality. We also went out to sites, observed behaviours and fed this into the project. The workshop sessions provided a springboard for discussion, taking delegates on a journey, exploring the personalities, attitudes, behaviours and situations they experience at work. This method allowed facilitators to guide Rok’s employees towards making connections between their own behaviour, that of others and how it links in to health and safety. The finale sees one of the characters dying in a serious accident. This was particularly hard-hitting as Rok employees had spent all day getting to know the character. The scenario tied in to the actions and attitudes of site workers and many saw themselves or their colleagues in this character. /results - 30 training events reached 1,221 staff at sites including Manchester, Chester and Bolton
